Want to set up your WIFI router? Searching for how to set up and configure your home router? The Internet is a powerful tool. It not only gives us access to massive information stored but in the modern era, everything runs on the internet for instance smart home devices. Especially during the pandemic, the usage of the internet has widened more and more. Not only work but classes, getting groceries, medicines, consulting a doctor everything can be done over the internet. If you have a poor network connection then you are not alone. Plenty of people face this issue. Having a poor network connection can be troublesome. Fortunately, it is pretty easy to set up your WIFI router if you have internet service at your home and a new router. In this article, we will walk you through step-by-step procedures to set up and configure your home router.

How To Set Up Your WIFI Router?

Unlike the old WIFI routers who used to have a complex setup process. The new WIFI routers can be easily set up and be used. Below we have provided the steps to set up your WIFI router.

Step 1: Decide where you want to place the router

It is always best to place your router in an open area of the workplace. Sometimes it is not easy to find an open area to place as your wireless router needs to be connected to the broadband gateway. The wireless router is connected usually by a cable near an outside wall.

Step 2: Connect the router to the internet

Attach your wireless router to a cable. You can even choose a mesh router if you want. To place the router at a distance you can make use of a CAT5e or CAT6 cable. Once you have selected the cable you can connect it to the Internet Service Provider or ISP gateway’s Ethernet port.

Another option to connect the router to the internet is by installing a mesh network with a router. A mesh network will allow you to place multiple Wi-Fi transmitters across your home or office. Unlike the extenders, which have the advantage of using them with any wireless router, a mesh network requires a router with this capability built-in.

  • Check the router’s LED lights

Every router will have LED lights inbuilt in them to indicate whether an active internet connection was made successfully or not. Generally, once you turn on the router, it should light all green LEDs, which means that the connection is set properly and an active internet connection is made. If you see a red light or if you do not see any lights confirming such a connection, then make sure you have plugged the cable properly and into the correct port.

  • Test the connection by connecting with a device

Confirm that your wireless router has a working connection by plugging a laptop computer into one of the device’s ports on the back of the router. If everything goes well then you will be able to get access over the internet.

Step 3: setup and configure your home router gateway

Sometimes, the ISPs offer customers a gateway with built-in routers. In many cases these combined devices are not made for a business environment, nor do they have a gateway port, security.  And other options that allow you to add services and expand the network as the business grows. If you have a gateway with an integrated router, then to disable the router you will have to configure the gateway and pass the WAN IP address and all network traffic to your new router.

Step 4: Connect the gateway to the router

The very first thing you have to do is to turn off the getaway. If the Local Area Network or the LAN port is already connected to an ethernet then remove it. After removing it, connect it to the router’s WAN port. Turn the gateway back on and wait for a few minutes so that it can coot up. Now plug in the router’s power supply and turn it on and wait for a few minutes.

Step 5: Configure your router

To configure your router you will have to get access to the admin’s interface. To get that the easiest way is to continue the setup using a mobile app if the router manufacturer has provided one. If there is no app then you can change it from the web-based dashboard. Now, connect the router to a computer via an Ethernet cable. Then type the IP address printed on the back of the router in the address bar. If router makers haven’t provided any IP address you can use ‘192.168.1.1’, a common router address. Using the default admin name and password you can log in to the admin’s interface. Once you are inside, you should immediately create a new username and password.

Step 6: Update the router’s firmware

Updating the firmware of your router will help to fix bugs and offer new security protections. Therefore make sure you constantly update your router’s firmware. You can do this by logging into the admin’s interface. In a few routers, it’s done automatically, but many router users have to manually update the router’s firmware.

Step 7: Change the WIFI router settings

Just like most routers have a default admin password and username, your WIFI router settings also have one. Once you are set with the admin interface setup, you will have to set a Wi-Fi password and username. Make sure you give a strong password because using this password anyone can log in to your WIFI and use it.

Step 8: Set up security for your router

Many router makers perceive security functionality to safeguard your network and user privacy to avoid stealing your WIFI connection from others. You can log in to the admin dashboard and enable the security features. And set it to a WPA2 security format rather than less protected WEP. You can even set up virtual private networks or VPN for privacy. That’s it! This is how you set up your WIFI router for better coverage and strength of the WIFI signal.
