For all the computer gamers and PS4 gamers, their data is the most precious thing they ever had. You never want to lose this data at any cost. Therefore, it becomes of vital importance to keep your data safe and backed up to some external drive lest you lose all of it accidentally. The importance of backup is crucial, hence, to backup PS4 hard drive is equally important. So, if you are looking for a way to backup the PS4 hard drive, you are at the right place.

But before we get into the procedure, let us first learn about why it is important to backup your data.

Why Should you Backup the PS4 Hard Drive?

With the increase in cyber and virus attacks, it is very important to keep all the data safe and secure. If you have a business account, it becomes more important as the loss of data can pose a serious threat. Similarly, if you are a gamer, your backup is all our hard work stored as data. You don’t want to lose it for a thousand bucks.

No matter where your data has been stored by you, whether it is on the PC, your mobile phone, or the SD card, you have to create an alternative space to backup everything. All the digital or electronic spaces are susceptible to data loss for various reasons like natural disasters, virus attacks or some sudden hardware failure. For this reason, you need to back up the PS4 hard drive.

Also, sometimes human errors can lead to the erasure of data no matter how cautious you are. These are the type of errors no one has anticipated.

How Many Types of Data Backup are There?

Data backups are of different types. Let us familiarize each of them with a brief introduction. So if you want to make your data secure, choose software that contains almost all modes of backup thereby, making the software flexible and efficient.

There are namely three kinds of backup:

  1. Full backup
  2. Incremental backup
  3. Differential backup

Let us acquaint each one of them with a brief introduction.

Full Backup

As the name suggests, full backup your entire drive, meaning every file and folder. So every time you want to do a full backup, all of your data will be backed up. One little disadvantage of this kind of backup is that it backs up every trivial and redundant file and folder on your PS4 drive, regardless of whether you need it or not.

Hence, this kind of data backup is suitable for the first time only, else it starts taking up the storage of your PS4 device.

Incremental Backup

This comes after you have done your full backup. This kind of backup will not re-backup the files or folders that were already backed up during the process of the full backup. Hence, it takes less time and less storage and also reduces the backup data. You can perform this kind of data on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on your need and urgency.

Differential Backup

Also known as a cumulative backup, this comes after incremental backup and backs up only the data or those files and folders that were changed or modified since the last incremental backup. This takes more time than incremental backup and is a little slow.

How to Backup the PS4 Hard Drive?

Now, if your PS4 is running out of memory and is becoming a hindrance, then you can just backup the PS4 hard drive.

Before we proceed with backing up your data, make sure that the hard drive you want to back up your PS4 data into has twice the storage than your PS4 because your PS4 makes a copy of all the data when it copies, hence, taking up more storage. Also, you need to format your external hard disk to FAT32 or exFAT format.

Here is how to backup PS4 hard drive:

  1. Go to the ‘Trophies’ tab with an icon of a trophy, and press the X key there.
  2. Coming to the next screen that opens up, press ‘Options’.
  3. Press the ‘Sync with PlayStation Network’ button and then press the X key again to start the process of backing up.

After you are done with this, now begin the process of moving on the PS4 data to an external hard drive.

  1. Plugin your external hard disk in PS4.
  2. Go to the settings tab and press X.
  3. Then appears the next menu, from there press X again.
  4. Select the ‘Backup and Restore’ option by pressing the X key.
  5. Select ‘Back up’ and press X.
  6. After this, select all the data you want to backup on the hard drive. Make sure that you are backing up the saved data else you end up losing it if it is unsaved.
  7. After the process of backing up is over, name the storage device as ‘back up’.

And this is how you back up the PS4 hard drive. After this completion of backing, eject your hard drive safely and you are done.
