How To Add Lines In MS Word?

How to Make Lines in Word Using a Keyboard?

Everything becomes easy and quick only if you know the relevant and necessary shortcut keys to them. Similarly, just by clicking a few words, you can insert line in word with its AutoFormat feature that also creates bulleted lists. Moreover, you can not only insert line in word with the help of this feature but can also choose what kind of design you want with the lines. Want to know how? This is how you can do it:

  1. Put your blinking cursor on the point from where you would like to start adding the horizontal line.
  2. After you choose the design for the line you wish to draw then type three characters as shown below against each line.
  3. Press enter and your line is drawn on the screen.

Here are some of the variations of how to make lines in word:

  • To draw a plain single-line draw three hyphens (—)
  • To draw a broken or a dotted line, press three asterisks (***)
  • To draw a plain double line, type three equal signs on the keyboard (===)
  • For a bold single line, draw three underline symbols (___)
  • For drawing a triple line with a thick centre, type three number or hashtag  signs (###)
  • For a wavy line, draw three tildes (~~~)

Now if you are worried about the length of the line you have added just in your word file, then it takes up the entire width of the page. In order to add text on the line, place your cursor on the point from where you want to start and then begin typing the text you want. 

Also, while you are typing your text over the line, you will see the auto-correct option hovering above your text. This option acts as a shortcut and will help you to undo the automatic line moving with text whenever you want to. 

Another way to stop words from inserting the line in your text is via AutoFormat. All you need to do is to go to the AutoFormat options dialogue and click on the ‘Uncheck border lines’ option to remove the underlining. If you want a specific part of any text then select the desired text and apply this option. 

How to Insert a Horizontal Line in the Word?

This is another way to insert line in word if you think that the AutoCorrect option is a long or not a comfortable option for you, then there is another quicker method for you to add line in word. Here is how you do it:

  1. Put your cursor at the point from where you want to insert the line in the word file.
  2. Tap on the Home tab on the above ribbon and click on the dropdown arrow that is present in the borders option in the Paragraph group.
  3. This will display a list of options for you. Tap on the horizontal line option that is present there.
  4. In order to modify the details of the lines, you can double-click on the line which will enable the Format horizontal line which will allow you to adjust the length, width, height, colour, alignment of the line.
  5. The same goes with the resizing procedure, double-tap on the horizontal line and change the resizing points to your desired width and height.
  6. If you wish to delete the line, press the Delete key on the keyboard.

Another Way to Insert Line in Word: Use Borders to Add Horizontal and Vertical Lines

Another easy and quick way that not only insert horizontal but also vertical lines in word can be done using the borders option. Here is how to do it:

  1. Put your blinking cursor at the point from where you want to insert line in word or click on the paragraph of your text where you wish to insert line.
  2. Click on the home option and go to the paragraph group.
  3. Tap on the border button. This inserts the line on the text you have selected and if not, it inserts the line where you pointed the cursor.
  4. Now if you wish to access other options like inserting a vertical line, click on the tiny arrow on the borders option where you will see a list of options.
  5. If you wish to change the design of the line, click on the borders and shading option and make adjustments accordingly.

How to Make Lines in Word Using Shapes?

Another way to insert line in word is via the shapes menu that consists of several different options. Let us have a look at how to add line in word through shape menu:

  1. Place the cursor on the screen where you wish to insert it.
  2. Click on the insert option.
  3. Go to the illustrations group and click on shapes from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the option of lines, pick what design you want and drag it across your document to where you want to add.
  5. In order to make further adjustments, go to shape styles.
