Let us tell you that google chrome makes it pretty easy to change between multiple Google accounts. One would think that is an amazing feature by Google. Yes, that is correct, but it has certain limitations. For example, you cannot remove one google account separately or change the default google account with one click. So if you are wondering how to change the default google account and what is meant by a default account?

When you open any Google product website from the Chrome browser on your computer, you might have noticed that it always signs you in with a certain account. This account is known as the default account. You might want to change the default account if you have signed in with your work and personal accounts.

Let us see how can you do so and also understand default accounts in brief.

What is the default account in Google Chrome?

The first feature of Google Chrome is quite important and is often ignored. Whichever Google account you use to sign in to any Google service like Gmail account, Google Drive or Photos, etc., from Chrome, the same will become your default account for all the Google services and Chrome. However, Chrome’s sync feature will be turned off until you enable it yourself.

Another method that Chrome makes a certain default Google account is when you set up Chrome’s sign-in feature.

Now, when a particular Google account is taken up as default, anything that you surf on Google website will be considered as that account’s activity. Further, when you open any of the Google services, the default account will automatically log into that.

For example, if you open Gmail or Google drive on your browser, you will be moved to the default account. There, you will be supposed to switch accounts to use the service from another account. Even if you change the account, all the browsing data and search history will be linked to your default account.

How to identify default Google Chrome?

Now you may wonder how can we identify the default account. Firstly, you need to open any Google services such as Gmail, Drive, Photos, or even the own Google homepage. Now, click on the profile icon that is available at the right corner. Now, a list of logged-in Google accounts will appear. Then, you can see the text Default mentioned next to your default account.

How to Change Default Google Account?

Earlier, Multiple account sign-ins were a mess, but now it is more seamless and smooth than ever before. This function allows you to see the content of your other accounts while logged into your default google account. But you can not use some of the Google tools from two accounts at one time e.g. Google Photos unless you choose one.

Google defaults to the first account that you logged into with. This rule will be applicable and you will see in action every time. At the top right, the Google menu also suggests the default account when you use the multiple sign-ups.

This is what Google will say:

“In several cases, your default account is the one that you signed in with first. On mobile phones, your default Gmail account can vary depending on your device’s operating system and the that apps you use.”

So, to change default google account you should:

  • You need to go to any Google service site and sign-in page in a non-incognito window.
  • Now, you need to log out of all your Google accounts. Then, select your profile picture on the top-right and then tap on Sign out from the menu.
  • Move to gmail.com and then sign in with the account that you want to set as the default account. You should always remember that the first account that you log in to becomes the default always. To test this, you can signup into any other Google service like Google Drive and see for yourself.
  • After you have signed up into your default account, you can sign in to any other Google account and switch among them.
  • Again, you need to select your profile image from the top-right corner. In the menu, select Add account. Now, use your account credentials to sign in to the account that you want to use.

This won’t bother someone who uses a single Google account. But it can be vital for those of us who use multiple Gmail accounts for work and personal. Remembering the right account credentials can help you to save you time and energy.
